In recent years, there has been a proliferation of tattoo designs inspired by Celtic culture. These go by many names, including the Celtic motherhood knot and the mother and child knot.
The meaning behind these symbols is relatively straightforward. They represent the unbreakable bond that exists between a mother and child. The use of interconnected knots or loops represents this everlasting, immeasurable bond.
While these designs are heavily influenced by the Celtic style, these mother-child knots are a modern invention. This certainly does not diminish their meaning or value, but it’s important to understand their origins, especially if you’re considering getting one inked on your skin!
At Tatteco, we are proud to offer our customers an enormous collection of temporary tattoos in a wide range of styles. These eco-friendly fake tattoos are the perfect way to experiment with different designs and placements before getting a tattoo.
We love the elegant simplicity of Celtic-inspired tattoos, so we decided to create our own set of family unity temporary tattoos. These are a great way to celebrate your family or the beautiful connection between you and your children.
Who were the Celts?
Before we share our collection of motherhood knot sticker tattoos, let’s have a quick history lesson. A common misconception is that the ancient Celts were Irish or Scottish, but this group of people was not from one specific country. Instead, the Celts were a group of tribes or clans that shared a language, belief system, and cultural traditions.
These fierce warriors lived across much of Europe, and evidence of their existence can be found throughout modern Central Europe, including France and Germany, as well as Northern Europe, where their presence heavily influenced British, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish culture. Evidence of their existence also exists throughout the Iberian peninsula, and their clashes with the Romans are well documented.
Over the course of hundreds of years, the Celts circulated throughout most of Western Europe, and their presence is remembered by the artwork, folklore, and traditions they left behind. The Celtic trinity knot, or triquetra, is one of the most well-known of their cultural contributions.
What is the Celtic Triquetra or Trinity Knot?
Many of the so-called Celtic symbols are not Celtic symbols at all. They are actually modern interpretations of the triquetra, which is also called the trinity knot. This is one of the most well-known symbols in the world and today is synonymous with Celtic culture.
As with much of ancient Celtic history, we do not know when the triquetra first came into existence. Variations of this symbol have been found throughout Europe during many different periods, but scholars agree that the design is at least 5,000 years old.
The symbol became prevalent during the 7th century in Insular art, which defined a distinct style found throughout Britain and Ireland in this period. It is characterized by intricate, ornate designs that often feature geometric elements such as spirals, circles, and triskeles.
